Studio Saturday with Saskia Ozols: Painting with the Colors of Ancient Egypt
The Louisiana Art & Science Museum (LASM) will host its next Studio Saturday Art Workshop on Saturday, January 25, from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Join painter and curator Saskia Ozols for a painting workshop focusing on the unique color palette of the ancient Egyptians, in collaboration with LASM’s newest exhibition, Discoveries on the Nile: Exploring King Tut’s Tomb and the Amin Egyptian Collection. This class welcomes both experienced oil painters and beginners.
Ozols, a New Orleans painter, independent curator, and featured artist for this year’s Art in Bloom at the New Orleans Museum of Art, has an exhibition record that spans three decades and includes regional, national, and international venues. She founded the Fine Arts Preservation Society of New Orleans and The Ozols Collection: A Museum of American Painting and Pedagogy; has taught at Boston University, Tulane University, and Loyola University; and her work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in cities including New Orleans, Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Moscow, and St. Petersburg. Ozols holds an MFA from the Museum School of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and currently organizes classes for the Fine Arts Preservation Society of New Orleans.
This month’s Studio Saturday Art Workshop, designed for individuals ages 14 and above, will be held from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM in the Cary Saurage Art Studio in the Lamar Educational Classroom at LASM, with a $65 admission price for non-members and a $45 admission price for LASM members. Interested participants are encouraged to register early since space is limited for workshops.
Each Studio Saturday student will create a painting that they will take home, with LASM providing all necessary materials, including tabletop easels for a shared workspace and a wood panel for each student. Participants are welcome to bring their own easels, favorite brushes, and tools to work with a limited palette of colors that will also be provided by the museum.
LASM’s “Studio Saturdays” are supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, as administered by the RAC. Funding has also been provided by the National Endowment of the Arts and funded in part by the Alma Lee, Norman and Cary Saurage Fund of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation on behalf of Cary Saurage.
