Studio Saturday with Mike Weary: Inspired by the Art of Frank Hayden

The Louisiana Art & Science Museum will hold its next Studio Saturday Art Workshop on Saturday, September 7, from 10 AM - 12 noon, featuring local artist Mike Weary.

Mike Weary is a self-taught artist born, raised, and based in south Louisiana. A Baton Rouge resident with roots in New Orleans, he describes his style as Southern-gothic-meets-Black-expressionism due to the emotion conveyed in his subject matter. His unique painting style focuses on the complexities and dynamics of life in the Deep South. Not only does Weary create original fine artworks, but he also paints for live events and custom-commissioned pieces.

The students in attendance will paint observations of sculptures by Frank Hayden from the LASM collection. Weary will cover basic painting techniques as well as narrative storytelling.

The classes are designed for individuals ages 15 and above. Art materials will be supplied by LASM, and the workshop will be held from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM in Classroom 1 at LASM, with a $45 admission price for non-members and a $35 admission price for LASM members.

Weary says he is known as “the guy who paints upside down," often working on his paintings upside down to better understand the shapes and colors. He typically uses oil paint, iron, copper, charcoal, and acrylic paint to create his works on wooden panels. His work is inspired by the unique experiences people of color have in America. He is a resident artist at the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge’s Cary Saurage Community Art Center.

LASM’s “Studio Saturdays” are supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, as administered by the RAC. Funding has also been provided by the National Endowment of the Arts and funded in part by the Alma Lee, Norman and Cary Saurage Fund of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation on behalf of Cary Saurage.

If you plan to attend one of our Studio Saturday art programs and would like to apply for LASM's Art Lean Scholarship, sponsored by Dr. Khanh Ho and LASM, please visit tinyurl.com/LASMArtLeanScholarship.
