The Louisiana Art & Science Museum is proud to honor local and regional artists who are contributing to the vitality of Louisiana’s current art scene. Capitol City Contemporary is an annual series of exhibitions. Begun in 2014, each display spotlights a specific theme or medium. This year’s artist selection focuses on photographers.
Photography has been in a state of constant change since the dawning of the digital era. With cell phones and SLR cameras, taking photographs is now a snap. Software, such as Photoshop, has made enhancing images possible without chemicals. Meanwhile Facebook and Instagram enable unlimited image sharing, negating the publisher.
Witnesses to this dramatic transformation, photographers today have a choice concerning their use of the medium. While some artists embrace digital technology, others opt to continue the traditional practice of shooting and developing film. A few combine methods, preferring to experiment.
Regardless of their chosen method, the artists whose work is on view have mastered the photographic medium and are using the camera as a unique image-making tool, successfully capturing moments in time that express their personal sensibilities in a compelling and engaging manner.
