Using star charts, this interactive lesson challenges the student’s ability to locate seasonal planets and constellations in the night sky. Lesson content is geared for every individual grade level with an abbreviated version of the program recommended for students in Grades Pre-K–K. Upper grades also focus on the identification of other stellar objects, planetary orbits, and distances. Students may keep the star charts for classroom use.

Grade Level: Pre-K12

Grades Pre-K–4
SI-E-A1  Ask questions about objects and events in the environment.

Grade K
ESS-E-B1  Discuss and differentiate objects seen in the day and/or night sky (e.g., clouds, Sun, stars, Moon).

Grade 1

SI-E-A1  Ask questions about objects and events in the environment.
SI-E-A1  Pose questions that can be answered by using students’ own observations and scientific knowledge.
SI-E-A2  Predict and anticipate possible outcomes.

Grade 2

ESS-E-B1  Describe characteristics of the Sun, stars, and Earth’s moon (e.g., relative size, shape, color, production of light/heat).

Grade 3

ESS-E-B1  Identify, in order, the planets of the solar system.
ESS-E-B2  Describe the patterns of apparent change in the position of the Sun.
ESS-E-B4  Explain the results of the rotation and revolution of Earth (e.g., day and night, year).

Grade 4

ESS-E-B2  Diagram the movement of the Moon around Earth and the movement of Earth around the Sun.
ESS-E-B6  Identify the relationship between Earth’s tilt and revolution and the seasons.

Grade 5-8

SI-M-A1  Generate testable questions about objects and events that can be answered through scientific investigation.
SI-M-A5  Use evidence to make inferences and predict trends.

Grade 5

ESS-M-C1  Describe the significance of Polaris as the North Star.
ESS-M-C1  Explain why the Moon, Sun, and stars appear to move from east to west across the sky.
ESS-M-C4  Explain rotation and revolution by using models or illustrations.

Grade 8
ESS-M-C7  Explain how seasonal changes are caused by the tilt of Earth as it rotates on its axis and revolves around the Sun.
ESS-M-C7  Illustrate and explain how the angle at which sunlight strikes Earth produces changes in the seasons and length of daylight.

Grades 9–12
SI-H-A3  Use technology when appropriate to enhance laboratory investigations and presentations of findings.
SI-H-A4  Choose appropriate models to explain scientific knowledge or experimental results (e.g., objects, mathematical relationships, plans, schemes, examples, role-playing, computer simulations).

Grades 11–12 (Earth Science)
ESS-H-D6  Demonstrate the elliptical shape of Earth’s orbit and describe how the point of orbital focus changes during the year.
ESS-H-D7  Summarize how current technology has directly affected our knowledge of the universe.
