Ancient Egypt and Its Art

Class Description

The Ancient Egypt Gallery is filled with unique opportunities to learn about the culture of Ancient Egypt. After a guided tour of the gallery, where they view authentic artifacts, a re-created tomb, and a 2,300 year-old mummy, students create their own Egypt-inspired artworks.

State Standards, Benchmarks, and GLEs

Grades 3–4
VA-CA-E2 Students will identify images, colors, and other art elements that have specific meanings in cultural contexts
VA-HP-E5 Students will recognize professions in the visual arts and the role and status of the artist in various cultures and periods
VA-AP-E2 Students will recognize and respond to concepts of beauty and taste in the ideas and creations of others through the study of visual arts
VA-CE-E4 Students will experiment to create various art forms, including art forms from other cultures

Grade 5
VA-CA-M2 Students will analyze and interpret art images for their symbolic meaning, purpose, and value in place and time
VA-HP-M5 Students will describe and compare careers in visual arts and the role and status of the artist in various cultures and time periods
VA-AP-M2 Students will recognize that concepts of beauty differ by culture and that taste varies from person to person
VA-CE-M4 Students will develop skills in creating art forms, including art forms from other cultures

Grade 3
H-1A-E3 Students will identify ways different cultures record their histories (e.g., oral, visual, written)

Grade 4
H-1D-E1 Students will identify significant historical achievements of various cultures of the world (e.g., building of the pyramids, founding of the Olympics)

Grade 5
G-1A-M2 Students will interpret a map, using a map key/legend and symbols, distance scale, compass rose, cardinal or intermediate directions, and latitude and longitude

Grade 6
What a perfect compliment to Louisiana’s 6th grade Social Studies, comprehensive curriculum. Included is an intimate guided tour of LASM’s Ancient Egypt Gallery, which is full of factual information and actual artifacts from ancient Egypt, ancient Rome and ancient Greece.
