Class Description

Students identify the basic functions of the parts of the body and learn how to use the new MyPlate guidelines to make healthy dietary choices. The class culminates with a food group fashion parade guaranteed to be memorable!


Grade Level: 1-2

State Standards, Benchmarks, and GLEs

Grade One

Pose questions that can be answered by using students’ own observations and scientific knowledge (SI-E-A1)

Use the five senses to describe observations (SI-E-A3)

Measure and record length and temperature in both metric system and U.S. system units (SI-E-A4)

Explain and give examples of how scientific discoveries have affected society (SI-E-B6)

Sort a group of objects by using multiple characteristics (PS-E-A1)

Identify what animals and plants need to grow and develop (LS-E-A1)

Describe basic functions of parts of the body (e.g., lungs, heart, bones, muscles) (LS-E-A3)

Grade Two

Pose questions that can be answered by using students’ own observations, scientific knowledge, and testable scientific investigations (SI-E-A1)

Predict and anticipate possible outcomes (SI-E-A2)

Use the five senses to describe observations (SI-E-A3)

Measure and record length and temperature in both metric system and U.S. system units (SI-E-A4)

Explain and give examples of how scientific discoveries have affected society (SI-E-B6)

Identify and discuss the arrangement of the food pyramid (LS-E-A6)

Analyze selected menus to determine whether they include representatives of all the required food groups (LS-E-A6)
