Quilts and Geometry |
|
|
Class Description
This delightful approach to the world of geometry introduces young students to traditional patchwork quilts, the geometric shapes that form them, and patterns. Students apply higher-order thinking skills as they manipulate and transform a simple square into individual (paper) quilt blocks for their classroom quilt.

State Standards, Benchmarks, and GLEs
Grades 1–3 VA-CA-E1 Students will view works of art and express observations about how the elements and principles of design are used in the works VA-AP-E4 Students will recognize that there are many possibilities and choices in the processes for designing and producing visual arts VA-HP-E4 Students will identify media used in works of art throughout history and recognize the importance of available resources VA-CE-E6 Students will identify relationships among visual arts, other arts, and disciplines outside the arts
Grade 1 N-1-E Students will use region modes and sets of objects to demonstrate understanding of the concept of halves Unit 4 # 6 G-2-E Students will determine if a shape has a line of symmetry by folding (Unit 4 #28) Grade 2 P-1-E, N-9-E Students will recognize and extend, create, and explain patterns that involve simple rotations or size changes with geometric objects (Unit 6 #31)
Grade 3 G-2-E Students will apply concepts of congruence, similarity, and symmetry in real life situations (Unit 6 #30) G-3-E Students will recognize and execute specified flips, turns, and slides of geometric figures using manipulative and correct terminology (including clockwise and counterclockwise (Unit 6 #32)
