Exploring Abstract Art

Class Description

This entertaining class introduces students to the interesting world of abstract art. They begin to understand and appreciate it as they learn about the concept of abstraction. While studying works of famous 20th century artists, including Picasso, students explore different forms of abstraction and create abstracted self-portraits.

State Standards, Benchmarks, and GLEs

Grade 4
VA-CA-E5 Students will express interpretations about works of art and give supporting reasons
VA-AP-E2 Students will recognize and respond to concepts of beauty and taste in the ideas and creations of others through the study of visual arts
VA-HCP-E3 Students will identify art images from the past and present and discuss historical differences
VA-CE-E4 Students will experiment to create various art forms, including art forms from other cultures

Grades 5–8
VA-CA-M5 Students will develop interpretations about works of art and give supporting reasons
VA-AP-M2 Students will demonstrate awareness of various new ideas, possibilities, options, and situations pertaining to the art world
VA-HCP-M6 Students will identify major works of great and influential artists and recognize their achievements
VA-CE-M1 Students will demonstrate art methods and techniques in visual representations based on research of imagery
